Senseonics gains 2 large US insurers for implantable monitor

Senseonics Holdings Inc., the Germantown company that developed the only long-term implantable system for monitoring blood sugar, has had its system approved by more insurance carriers.

Health Care Service Corporation Blue Cross Blue Shield, which operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas and is the fourth-largest insurer in the United States, began covering the company’s  continuous glucose monitoring system on Oct. 15.

Humana, which is Humana is America’s fifth largest health insurer and covers 17 million patients across all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, began covering the system on Oct. 22.

Senseonics in August published data in a journal about how the system works for people who use it to manage their diabetes in hopes of getting more insurance companies to cover Eversense.
