A Maryland firm that makes autonomy and robotic technology will be operating an autonomous electric shuttle on a public road between its two office locations in .

Robotic Research LLC received a highly-automated vehicle permit from the Motor Vehicle Administration to operate a Local Motors Olli on a half-mile stretch of Gateway Center Drive in Montgomery County.

All Local Motors Olli vehicles uses Robotic Research’s AutoDrive software and hardware to operate without a human driver. The company plans to use the opportunity to conduct further research about autonomous vehicle development.

It will be the first deployment of an Olli shuttle in Montgomery County and the second in Maryland. Local Motors is conducting demonstration testing at National Harbor.

The shuttle in Clarksburg will have a safety operator on board, available for immediate takeover of vehicle control if required, Robotic Research said.
