UMMS, Sheppard Pratt make US News’ top hospitals lists

Three University of Maryland Medical System hospitals – the University of Maryland Medical Center, UM St. Joseph Medical Center and UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center – and mental health provider Sheppard Pratt earned high rankings in U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 Best Hospitals, released Tuesday.
UMMC, the system’s flagship academic hospital with two campuses in Baltimore, is ranked No. 2 both in the state of Maryland and Baltimore metro areas. UMMC also ranked No. 28 nationally for the ear, nose and throat specialty and as “high performing” in cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopaedics and urology services.
UM SJMC, located in Towson, is No. 3 in the state and Baltimore metro for the third consecutive year.
UM BWMC, in Glen Burnie, is ranked No. 10 in Maryland and No. 8 in the Baltimore metro area.
Additionally, the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital is again ranked as one of the Best Children’s Hospitals for Cardiology and Heart Surgery.
Sheppard Pratt was named one of the nation’s top 10 psychiatric hospitals, coming in at No. 7. The facility been consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the country for psychiatry for more than 30 years.
The U.S. News rankings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.
Seven UMMS hospitals also were recognized by U.S. News as “High Performing” in specific procedures:
- UMMC: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd), colon cancer surgery, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, pneumonia, stroke and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (tavr)
- UM SJMC: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, back surgery (spinal infusion), COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement and stroke
- UM BWMC: COPD, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart failure, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery and stroke
- UM Prince George’s Medical Center: COPD, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure and kidney failure
- UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center: COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart failure and stroke
- UM Charles Regional Medical Center: COPD and kidney failure
- UM Shore Medical Center at Easton: COPD

The Best Hospitals specialty rankings assess performance in 15 specialties. Rankings for the psychiatry specialty are based solely on expert opinion surveys by board-certified physicians on a hospital’s ability to develop and sustain a system that delivers high-quality care.
For the 2021 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide. In the 15 specialty areas, 165 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.
