Baltimore School for the Arts puts own spin on holiday classic ‘The Nutcracker’

The Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA), one of the top public performing arts high schools in the country, presented an original production of the family-friendly ballet “The Nutcracker: A Magical Tale” in Mount Vernon Dec. 8 and 15 at the school’s Mark K. Joseph Building in Baltimore.

Choreographed by resident artist Amy Hall Garner, an internationally known choreographer who has worked for New York City Ballet, Miami City Ballet and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the BSA’s Nutcracker is a fresh spin on the original tale weaving elements of Baltimore culture and the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood into the storyline.

Additionally, Baltimore artist Chuck Nesci was commissioned to design the head mask for the Prince character and the helmets and soldier costumes are a specific reference to Fort McHenry and the defenders of 1814.
