Gregory A. Cross, partner at Venable LLP, has spent 37 years helping clients navigate complex litigation while maintaining a steadfast commitment to public service in Maryland. As partner-in-charge of the firm’s Baltimore office, Cross balances his legal practice with volunteer work that’s reshaping the state’s horse racing industry.

What’s the most important thing you do?

As the partner-in-charge of Venable’s Baltimore office, I primarily spend my days helping clients succeed in complex litigation. But my most important current task is as a volunteer, overseeing Maryland’s $500 million investment to rebuild the Pimlico race course, boost the Park Heights community and modernize thoroughbred racing in Maryland.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

Success is never guaranteed, but hard work and perseverance matter the most. In the legal profession and public service, there is tremendous value in always taking the time to work the problem and search for the best answer to the toughest questions. It takes time and effort to get to the right answer. The world is full of smart people. To stand out, you need to work the hardest and care the most.

What’s the most significant challenge facing our state?

We have to find ways to harness the unrealized economic advantages the City of Baltimore possesses. We must capitalize on our geography, transportation network and leading growth industry positions in areas like cybersecurity and biotechnology to fully realize the tremendous economic engine Baltimore can be for the entire state.
