The Baltimore Ravens and The Stephen and Renee Bisciotti Foundation announce a $20 million grant to Baltimore hospitals to help grow the nursing workforce and provide support for nurses.
Four $5 million grants are being given to MedStar Health, University of Maryland Medical System, Johns Hopkins Health System and Mercy Medical Center. They will be used to develop innovative approaches for recruitment, training and retention of nurses with a goal to help curb the projected nursing shortfall.
“The Baltimore region is fortunate to have world-class medical institutions,” Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said. “Nurses are the unsung heroes of our health care system, and investing in them ensures we have skilled, dependable professionals who keep it running smoothly.”
There is currently a national nursing shortage, and by 2036, Maryland is expected to have a 20% shortage, which equates to 14,700 nurses. Additionally, the Maryland Hospital Association’s Healthcare Workforce Report found that one in every four hospital nursing positions was vacant due to high staff turnover, shifting care delivery models and an insufficient talent pipeline.
