Erek Barron joins new law firm after tenure as US attorney for MD
Erek Barron, Maryland’s former U.S. attorney, has been hired by the law firm Mintz.
Barron, who resigned his post as Maryland’s top federal prosecutor in February, is joining the firm as a member in its white collar defense and government investigations practice.
A news release from Mintz states Barron will work in Maryland and in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, and “his practice will include complex civil, criminal, and regulatory matters.”
Appointed by former President Joe Biden, Barron was Maryland’s first Black U.S. attorney, serving from October 2021 until February, a few weeks after President Donald Trump took office.
“Mintz is known for its litigation prowess, multidisciplinary expertise, and elite client service, which makes it the ideal platform for my return to private practice,” Barron stated in the press release.
“I look forward to working alongside an extraordinary group of talented, dedicated, and experienced professionals and applying my experience to help our clients successfully navigate high-stakes disputes and protect their reputations.”
Barron’s term as U.S. attorney coincided with a steep drop in homicides, particularly in Baltimore.
His office prosecuted former Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, who was eventually convicted of perjury and mortgage fraud. (Mosby appealed and is awaiting a decision.) Barron’s office also secured a conviction against Stephen Snyder, the prominent Baltimore medical malpractice lawyer, for attempting to extort the University of Maryland Medical Center. (Snyder is in the initial stages of his appeal.)
In January 2024, his office charged three people who allegedly orchestrated a $1.9 billion cryptocurrency fraud scheme.
Before serving as U.S. attorney, Barron was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 2015 to 2021, representing part of Prince George’s County. He was also a partner at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston for almost 10 years and. In Biden’s final two years in the U.S. Senate, Barron served as legal counsel to Biden on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Last year, Barron was selected as the Top Leader in Law by his fellow 2024 Leaders in Law honorees for The Daily Record’s 2024 Leaders in Law.
“Erek is a highly respected lawyer with an impressive background both in public service and private practice,” said Mintz Managing Member Bob Bodian.
“His extensive experience in high-stakes litigation, investigations, and corporate matters—combined with his various high-level positions in government—will bring immediate value to our clients across a broad range of industries.”
