Community College of Baltimore County has launched a new associate of science degree in artificial intelligence scheduled to begin this fall, school officials announced Monday.
The school’s new degree program seeks to introduce students to the foundational principles of artificial intelligence: machine learning, natural language processing, data-driven decision-making and more.
In a statement, CCBC said the program reinforces the institution’s commitment to preparing students for the evolving needs of the modern workforce. Designed to meet regional workforce demands, the program’s curriculum aims to emphasize practical applications and the ethical considerations of AI technologies.
“This program positions CCBC students at the forefront of one of the fastest growing and most influential fields in technology,” CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis said in a statement.
“As artificial intelligence continues to transform the way we live and work, it is critical that we equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to lead in this space—both as innovators and as responsible practitioners.”
CCBC’s AI degree concurs with bachelor’s degree programs in artificial intelligence at the University of Maryland Global Campus and the University of Baltimore – partner institutions in CCBC’s Degrees to Succeed initiative.
UMGC and UB offer dual admission opportunities to eligible students, a CCBC release says.
This degree is designed for transfer to a four-year institution as courses will be offered at the Catonsville and Essex campuses, and online.
Upon completion of the AI degree program, CCBC officials said graduates will be prepared for careers in software development, systems analysis, data science, computer research and information technology.
Citing labor market data reported by Lightcast, CCBC said entry-level positions in the AI industry are projected to grow by 11.6% in the Baltimore-Washington region by 2030 with a current median regional salary of $136,000.
