Major General James (Jim) D. Turinetti IV assumed duties as the 18th Commander of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command and Senior Commander of Aberdeen Proving Ground on June 28, 2024. He commands a 9,000-person, two-star global command and serves as senior commander of a 28,000-person military base.

As the U.S. Army’s Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and medical materiel integrator, Major General Turinetti is responsible for enabling the U.S. Army’s warfighting readiness by providing sustainable global support.

The Ohio native graduated from The Ohio State University and was commissioned into the U.S. Army Signal Corps in June 1994.

What’s the most important thing you do?

Deliver ready and reliable combat systems that work—every time, everywhere—ensuring a decisive edge in battle and driving the operational strength, agility, and resilience of our Army’s total readiness, while anticipating tomorrow’s challenges and preparing for the future fight. That’s the most important thing we do.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

If you don’t like change, you’ll like irrelevance even less.” Gen. Shinseki’s words have guided me, and my professional success has come from embracing adaptability and innovation in many ways. As the battlefield evolves, staying vigilant ensures our Soldiers remain protected and ready. The safety and lethality of our Soldiers depend on our ability to transform.

What’s the most significant challenge facing our state?

Keeping pace with changing technology. Maryland is home to some of our nation’s indispensable organizations, and we must continue to attract talent and prepare future generations to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Expanding school STEM programs and increasing career-building opportunities are a great step in the right direction. Technological innovation is the foundation of our nation’s future.
