According to estimates released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Maryland’s workforce increased by 11,700 jobs in July, Maryland Department of Labor officials announced Tuesday.
While the overall increase in jobs resulted from a reported gain of 900 private sector jobs and 10,800 public sector jobs, state officials highlighted that Maryland’s federal workforce experienced a 500-job decline and an unemployment rate increase from 3.3 percent to 3.4 percent in July.
Maryland has added more than 64,000 private sector jobs since the start of the Gov. Wes Moore administration, according to the Department of Labor, reflecting a growth rate in Maryland that slightly outpaces the nation (2.9 percent to 2.7 percent).
Some of the industries experiencing the largest employment gains in last month were: government (10,800); private educational services (1,700); health care and social assistance (1,300); retail trade (600); and arts, entertainment and recreation (500).
Conversely, the largest estimated employment losses in July were in transportation, warehousing and utilities (loss of 1,500); administrative/support and waste management/remediation services (1,100); construction (500); professional, scientific and technical services (300); and other services (300).
