John Hamilton joined the Municipal Employees Credit Union of Baltimore (MECU) in 2013 as vice president of lending. He was then named president in 2015 and assists his team in providing financial support to more than 100 charitable organizations.

MECU is a state-chartered credit union headquartered in Baltimore with $1.2 billion in assets and more than 115,000 members. Hamilton’s 35 years of experience in the financial industry has made a huge impact on the financial stability and growth of the company. In 2017, he was honored with the Community Advocate Award from the Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce.

In 2019, Hamilton led the efforts in opening a new MECU Credit Union brand in Randallstown, which was its 10th location.

Hamilton is a board member with Associated Black Charities, UMB Health Sciences Research Park and the Community Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association.  He graduated from Morehead College with a Bachelor of Science in finance.

What advice would you offer someone interested in banking and finance as a career?

Banking can be a very rewarding career. Banking and finance provides one with such a broad range of careers such as accounting, funds management, operations and technology. So first, approach your career in banking and finance knowing an area of interest. But with any career path, my advice is to constantly develop and re-invent yourself through training and education. Don’t be stagnant in one area and look for challenging opportunities and projects that increase your company worth.

What are the biggest challenges facing your industry?

One of the most significant challenges facing financial institutions is Cybersecurity, Fraud and Technology. While technologies like AI are providing new opportunities to improve efficiencies and deliver better service to customers/members, they present security challenges that must be addressed. Also, the industry is seeing widespread increases in fraud and customers must be vigilant about fraud schemes that are costing customers and the industry billions in losses.

What is your favorite part of living in Maryland?

Maryland is a great state and I call it home. Great sports, outdoors activities, restaurants, diverse communities and much more. Proud to be a Marylander.
