Frederick County receives $1M toward senior housing expansion

County has been awarded $1,000,000 in federal funds to redevelop the Frederick 50+ Community Center and bring units, county officials announced. 

According to a county news release, U.S. senators and , and Congresswoman April McClain Delaney, all Democrats, helped secure the funding designated to modernize the senior center located at 1440 Taney Ave. in Frederick.

As part of the Taney Avenue Senior Center project, the Frederick 50+ Community Center would be supplemented with affordable units for elderly residents. In accordance with County Executive Jessica Fitzwater’s vision, the project aims to offer “more robust support” for the county’s , according to the Monday release.

“By co-locating affordable with a renovated senior center, we can create a space where older residents can access essential services, social activities, and safe, comfortable living all under one roof,” Fitzwater said. 

“This approach strengthens community connections and ensures seniors can age in place with dignity and support.”

The funding was made possible by the Fiscal Year 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending program, as part of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Government Spending bill. Congress passed the legislation, which was later signed into law by President Donald Trump.

“Pairing affordable housing with access to senior services is a win-win for our older residents,” Van Hollen said.

“That’s why we worked to secure this $1 million in to update the Taney Avenue Senior Center and create new, adjacent affordable housing options for local residents. This investment will help ensure more seniors can live independently, with the support they need, in the community they call home.”

The Taney Avenue Senior Center project garnered additional support from community partners rooted in accessible housing advocacy. 

Frederick County is home to five community centers for those aged 50 or older.
