BGE – An Exelon Company

Sherita Thomas, director of HR operations at BGE – An Exelon Company, has a leadership philosophy: developing those who develop others creates exponential impact.
When Thomas joined BGE in 2023, she learned that HR team members — skilled at developing others across the organization — had limited structured opportunities for their own growth, often feeling like the “cobbler’s children.” She responded by designing a comprehensive professional development program that combined targeted skill-building sessions, coaching and mentoring, visits to different sites across the organization to observe operations and understand diverse business contexts, and exposure to enterprise leaders and external experts, including Gartner webinars.
The results were measurable. Within the first year, team engagement increased as employees reported feeling supported, challenged and valued. Retention among HR staff improved, ensuring continuity of leadership and expertise, while team members earned promotions and took on increased responsibility. Strengthened HR capability translated into more effective leadership support across the enterprise, from talent development to performance management, resulting in higher-functioning leadership teams and more consistent execution of strategic initiatives.
Thomas also recommended a Director Forum upon joining BGE, an initiative successfully implemented by the talent team and the CEO’s office in 2024, and established quarterly director meetings by function with HR to address recognition, engagement and performance management.
Beyond BGE, she mentors Kedra Jacox Paige, principal of Matthew A. Henson Elementary School, coaching her on executive presence, fostering accountability, cultivating a culture of collaboration and growth and leading with clarity, confidence and purpose while navigating complex organizational and community dynamics. Thomas will present alongside Paige at an upcoming school community event and plans to nominate her for the Heart of the School Award, which honors principals in Baltimore City Public Schools whose leadership fosters strong school culture, inclusive practices and meaningful support for students, staff and families
