Maryland State Police are investigating a recent inmate death at Roxbury Correctional Institution, south of Hagerstown.
The deceased was identified as Kelvin Hite, 27, according to a state police news release.
The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit contacted the state police homicide unit shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, May 4, about an inmate death, the release states.
“The preliminary investigation indicates Hite was found unresponsive in his cell and was later pronounced deceased. Police believe his cellmate was in the cell at the time of his death,” the release states.
An inmate had been identified as a suspect, but state police are not identifying him until charges are filed.
Hite was pronounced deceased by emergency medical service personnel and taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, the release states.
When the investigation is done, the findings will be presented to the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office for review about potential charges.
Roxbury, also known as RCI, is a level II medium security prison, according to the correctional services’ website. It is part of a state prison complex along Roxbury Road that includes the Maryland Correctional Training Center and the Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown.
