A Prince George’s County man was sentenced Friday to 100 years in prison for the murders of two county sheriff’s deputies last year as they tried to detain him on a warrant.James R. Logan, 25, was convicted last month of two second-degree murder charges and a handgun charge for the shooting of the deputies at his parents home Aug. 22, 2002.Under the sentence imposed by Circuit Court Judge E. Allen Shepherd, Logan will be eligible for parole in 50 years.Logan’s attorneys put forth an insanity defense during his trial, saying he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and believed he was a “messenger from God.”Prosecutors claimed Logan’s mental health problems were of his own making because he was a heavy user of marijuana and cocaine.Shortly before the shooting, Logan’s wife and mother obtained a court order mandating a psychiatric evaluation for him. When James Arnaud, 53, and Elizabeth Magruder went to serve the order, Logan first hid in his room, but then burst out with a 9mm handgun. He fired 10 rounds, hitting Arnaud with six and Magruder in the head.Logan was arrested two days later after he fled.
