Man convicted in slaying of Baltimore officer

A jury has convicted a Baltimore man in the fatal shooting of a city police officer.

The city state’s attorney’s office says Brandon Grimes was convicted Friday morning of first-degree murder in the death of Officer Troy Chesley. Grimes was also found guilty of using a handgun in a crime of violence.

Prosecutors say the 23-year-old Grimes tried to rob the officer outside his apartment before shooting him in January 2007.

Chesley was not in uniform, and authorities have said it’s unlikely Grimes knew he was a police officer.

Grimes’ former girlfriend testified that she saw him playing with a handgun moments before Chesley was shot. She said he stepped out of their vehicle, and then she heard gunfire before Grimes returned with a gunshot wound to the leg.
