Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, Senior Consultant Strategist for Academic & Research Diversity
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

While developing groundbreaking treatments for HIV patients is no small feat, Dr. Namandje N. Bumpus spends her spare time introducing underrepresented minorities to basic sciences.

As an associate professor, and one of the few basic science African-American faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she has worked to make biomedical education more inclusive.

Bumpus was the first associate dean of institutional and student equity at Hopkins. She began a mentoring program for faculty to ensure equity in educational and career development opportunities for graduates and students.

Dr. Craig Hendrix, director of the division of pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine says, “Dr. Bumpus is a gifted and nurturing mentor and role model who is instrumental in training the next generation of scientists. These accomplishments are especially noteworthy as women and minorities still haven’t achieved equity in academic medicine and are vastly underrepresented among senior faculty.”
