BGE opened the first of 500 planned public electric vehicle charging stations in Annapolis on Tuesday.

The new 2-plug Level 2 charger is now open for business at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane.

Drivers can use the new station and new locations once BGE activates them, through the Greenlots app or by phone. Charging rates are 18 cents per kilowatt-hour for a level 2 charge.

BGE plans to install a network of both level 2 chargers and direct current fast chargers at government properties in response to the Maryland Public Service Commission’s public conference on the state’s electric grid, part of which looked at  how utilities might provide enhanced support for electric vehicle adoption.

The network is chargers is part of a joint effort by Exelon’s Maryland-based utilities, BGE, Delmarva Power, and Pepco that aims to help with Maryland’s goal of having 300,000 zero-emissions vehicles on the road by 2025.
