Applications are now being accepted for the third cohort of the civic tech incubator Hutch.

Hutch is an intensive 24-month program that gives entrepreneurs a blueprint for building successful digital service firms, by empowering them with the tools, mentorship, and peer support they need to have a lasting impact.

It is one of the few incubators focused on civic tech and the only one that is managed by digital services experts focused on supporting women and minority entrepreneurs working in digital services.

Hutch intends to grow the number of minority-owned digital services firms competing in the $100 billion market.

Digital transformation in government is critical to ensuring Americans’ experience with federal government agencies is simple, fast and helpful – 93% of large-scale government IT projects fail, costing American tax-payers billions annually. The marketplace needs more digital services firms – those firms for which agile software development is the focus of their business, not an additional service they offer – to scale government digital transformation projects.

The cohort is limited to 10 attendees, so Hutch facilitators and mentors can get to know each business and their needs, providing individualized guidance.

The Hutch cohort meets once a month for day-long sessions on everything from brand development to leadership and financial planning featuring subject matter experts to provide tailored guidance on each topic.

To be eligible, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be the founder or highest ranking officer of a small business.
  • The applicant’s business must do work in the digital services space, and either currently in or planning to work in the public sector. Examples of Digital Services include Design, Development, DevOps and Cloud Engineering, Data Science, and Agile/Product Management.
  • The applicant must be willing to travel to Baltimore once a month for in-person classes when in-person education resumes.
  • The applicant’s business must have a community component and commitment to giving back.
  • Applicant must be ready to dig deep and actively participate in every session, and must be an empathetic individual who is ready to listen to and learn from others.
