Commissioners of St. Mary’s County
Buffy Giddens serves as county attorney for St. Mary’s County after previously holding the deputy county attorney position. She assumed her current role following 16 years as an assistant state’s attorney in multiple jurisdictions.
Before joining the County Attorney’s Office, Giddens worked as an assistant state’s attorney in St. Mary’s County, where she served in various capacities, including senior assistant state’s attorney, district court division chief, adult recovery court prosecutor and domestic violence prosecutor. Her earlier career included positions as an assistant state’s attorney in both Anne Arundel County and Baltimore City.
“As a young female, I was in awe of the ease with which Buffy comforted victims that she represented, her fight for those who could not fight for themselves, and her patience in teaching and guiding young females like me at the time,” wrote Nivea A. Ohri, a partner at Baldwin, Briscoe, Steinmetz & Ohri.
Giddens earned her juris doctorate from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology from the University of Maryland, College Park.
“She was a relentless advocate for victims, ensuring that their voices were heard and their rights upheld throughout the criminal justice process,” John Stackhouse, assistant state’s attorney and chief of major crimes in Charles County, stated in his recommendation letter.
Giddens’ community service includes volunteering with Christmas in April and Project Graduation and serving as a mock trial judge. She is active in professional organizations as a member of the Maryland State Bar Association Board of Governors and the St. Mary’s County Bar Association, where she previously served as treasurer.
She aspires to serve as a member of the judiciary in the future, viewing it as an opportunity to continue her commitment to public service and the legal profession.
