Maryland Dental Action Coalition presented the inaugural Senator Benjamin L. Cardin Oral Health Advocacy Lifetime Achievement Award to Senator Cardin in honor of his advocacy to improve the oral health of Marylanders.
The presentation was Nov. 17, 2025, at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City during MDAC’s biennial Oral Health Summit.
Senator Cardin accepted his recognition from a group of Maryland lawmakers who supported legislation to establish comprehensive Medicaid adult dental coverage, including: Senator Malcolm Augustine (D-Prince George’s County), Senator Mike McKay (R-Allegany, Washington and Garrett Counties), Delegate Heather Bagnall (D-Anne Arundel County), and Delegate Bonnie Cullison (D-Montgomery County).
In his remarks, Senator Cardin stressed the importance of active community engagement and the important role of public policy in improving the health of Maryland residents. He also remarked on the leadership of Maryland legislators to protect access to essential health services, including oral health services in our state.
This year’s oral health summit was titled “Innovation, Advocacy, Action: Shaping Maryland’s Oral Health Future,” and spotlighted Medicaid coverage, workforce solutions, school-based care, community health workers and the future of fluoridation.
Through keynotes and breakout sessions, more than 150 attendees gained insights and explored strategies to advance oral health equity statewide.
