Rehabilitation Institute at Sinai
The Rehabilitation Institute at Sinai, part of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, has spent the past decade growing from a regional provider into a nationally recognized leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Since its founding in 1965, the institute’s physicians, therapists and researchers have advanced patient care, trained future leaders, shaped policy and helped thousands of individuals regain independence after illness, injury or surgery. Every effort centers on helping patients maximize their recovery, both physically and psychologically, so they can return to the lives they love, with a commitment to innovation that consistently improves outcomes.
That commitment has produced numerous programs and initiatives shaping rehabilitation medicine, among them vocational rehabilitation and workforce development programs, medically supervised fitness programs and specialized neurological rehabilitation services. The institute also established a research division devoted to biomechanical and engineering advancements, drawing on technologies such as 3D printing and motion analysis to improve care. This work has continued without pause across decades of advancement.
What distinguishes the institute is an impact reaching beyond clinical care into education, research and advocacy. More than 100 students train there each year, multiple research initiatives receive its support, and collaboration across disciplines advances best practices throughout the field. Its leadership in policy and advocacy, paired with national accreditation, reinforces its standing as a hub for clinical, academic and research excellence.
The institute was founded by B. Stanley Cohen, M.D., and its direction over the years has been guided by contributors including former chief executive officers Warren Green and Neil Meltzer, along with past department chair Scott Brown, M.D. A multidisciplinary team of physicians, therapists, nurses, physician assistants and research staff drives the program’s continued success.
From the start, the goal has been to deliver transformational care for patients recovering from serious injuries and conditions while moving the field forward through research and innovation.
That aim has been realized through improved patient outcomes, the development of specialized programs and contributions to rehabilitation science and clinical practice. Coverage of the institute’s work has highlighted innovative prosthetic technologies, minimally invasive procedures and groundbreaking research initiatives.
