Gov. Martin O’Malley says Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner should consider investing federal money to help lending to small businesses across the nation.

O’Malley says Maryland will be proposing the creation of a credit recovery program to boost lending to small businesses.

The Democratic governor says he called Geithner, who is a Maryland resident, and pitched the idea of reinvesting Troubled Asset Relief Program dollars (TARP) to help spur lending on Main Street.

O’Malley says all 50 states have loan guarantee funds that have only been restricted by their ability to put money in them to leverage other dollars.

O’Malley says Geithner was interested in learning more about the idea. He says the state will follow up with him.
