HAGERSTOWN — The American Red Cross says it’s cutting 17 full-time staff positions across western, central and southern Maryland.

The nonprofit organization said Thursday it must consolidate operations in the Chesapeake region to reduce costs.

Spokesman Doug Lent says the budget for disaster relief isn’t affected.

Lent says offices in Cumberland and La Plata will close Friday. He says a part-time, paid employee will be hired to oversee operations in each of those areas.

Lent says the Red Cross offices in Hagerstown and Frederick will remain open.

He says all back office and administrative functions will be moved to Baltimore.

Lent says the cuts will save $580,000, or about 25 percent of the region’s budget.
