Federal agencies, including federal courts in Maryland, will be closed on Jan. 9 for President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit have announced planned closures for the National Day of Mourning, following Carter’s death on Dec. 29.

Electronic filing will remain available on Jan. 9 for both courts.

“In tribute to the life, character, and public service of James Earl Carter Jr., the thirty-ninth President of the United States, and consistent with the President’s declaration of a National Day of Mourning, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and its Court offices will be closed for business in both divisions on Thursday, January 9, 2025,” the court announced in a news release.

A spokesperson for the Maryland Judiciary said the Judiciary will be open Jan. 9 at this time.

Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development, according to The White House.
