New Baltimore City District Court building to open next month
One of the four courthouses used by the Baltimore City District Court is moving about a half mile away next month.
The courthouse at 501 E. Fayette St., known as the Civil Building, is closing permanently at 4:30 on Friday, Oct. 10 and reopening at 500 North Calvert St. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, according to a Tuesday afternoon news release from the Maryland Judiciary.
The Commissioner’s Centralized Application Station, currently located at 1 N. Charles St., is also moving to the Calvert Street location. That facility will close at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, and will reopen in the new location at noon on the same day.

The Shillman Building, originally built in 1973, was gutted and renovated for the new court with funds approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works in 2023. The state awarded Timonium-based CAM Construction a $68 million contract for the project.
“This state-of-the-art facility promotes best practices in both security and sustainability,” Maryland General Services Secretary Atif Chaudhry said in a 2023 news release. “The new courthouse will allow the judicial system to more efficiently conduct its business and meet the evolving needs of Maryland’s citizens.”
District courts occupy the lowest rung of the Maryland judiciary; they handle landlord-tenant cases, small claims, motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors and some felonies.
The three other Baltimore City District Court locations — on Wabash Avenue, East Patapsco Avenue and East North Avenue — are staying where they are.
