Kathleen M. Kirchner, Attorney at Law
Kathleen M. Kirchner Esq. opened her own practice in 2008 after serving as an Assistant States Attorney for Anne Arundel County. She first focused on criminal defense but grew her practice to include family law.
She is one of the few female private defense attorneys that handles all criminal matters, including homicide. She works to assist clients not only with their criminal cases, but to improve their lives and reach their goals.
What’s the most important thing you do in your job?
The most important thing I do is defend the Constitution. In addition, assist clients and their families to feel heard and supported during incredibly difficult moments. Whether someone is facing criminal charges or going through a family crisis, they’re often scared and overwhelmed. Being able to stand with them and making them feel represented, giving them a voice, and fighting for their future is what I value most in my work.
What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?
I wish the legal system moved faster and felt less intimidating for everyday people. The long delays, confusing processes, and emotional toll can make an already stressful situation feel at times unbearable. I would love to see a system that is more efficient, more humane, and easier for families to navigate.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
If I weren’t practicing law, I would still be working with people and definitely as an advocate for the “underdog” — perhaps teaching, counseling, and or as a life coach in some capacity.
Especially our young people are desperate for guidance. I believe I am driven by a need to support others through difficult times and to help them believe in their own strength and make an impact if I can. No matter what, we are a part of our client’s life story.
