Associated Press//January 10, 2011//
Baltimore police have identified an officer who was fatally shot outside a nightclub.
A spokesman says 33-year-old William Torbit Jr., an eight-year veteran, was fatally shot outside a nightclub early Sunday as a fight spilled onto a parking lot.
A civilian was also killed in the melee, and four others, including another police officer, were hurt.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a statement Monday that Torbit was a narcotics officer in the Central District. She said the police department is grieving a painful loss.
