Virginia may seek Supreme Court ruling on health care

, Va. — Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says his office may petition the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the state’s challenge to federal health care legislation and let the case bypass the appellate court system.

Cuccinelli says Virginia has discussed the idea with lawyers from the U.S. Justice Department. The state expects a this month in on the constitutionality of the new law.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Justice declined comment Friday.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has said that implementing the new law would cost the state an additional $1.5 billion in health costs by 2022, partly because of expanding Medicaid, a health care program for the poor.

Led by Florida, 20 other states also have filed challenges to the law.
