Western Md. gas supplier seeks surcharge

HAGERSTOWN — Columbia Gas of Maryland is seeking to add a surcharge of $1.92 a month to the bills of residential customers in Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties starting Feb. 1.

The Herald-Mail reported Sunday that the company has asked the state Public Service Commission to approve the surcharge to help pay for infrastructure replacement.

That’s the same reason for a 9.4 percent residential rate increase that took effect Sept. 25. For an average residential customer, that increase came to $6.22 a month.

Regulators approved the September rate increase to enable the company to raise about $3.6 million to replace pipes and other equipment.

A spokesman says the surcharge would enable the company to recover costs not covered by the rate increase.
