Steve Chaikin created in Montgomery County “Speak Up, Save a Life” a prescription/opiod prevention program to help communities combat the increase in drug overdoses.

“The goal was to educate the community regarding the epidemic, and show them the resources that are available,” he said. “I have spent hundreds of hours organizing meetings and soliciting schools, organizations, and places of worship.”

To that end, he has assembled five different presentations for all ages and has a panel of speakers that he moderates that includes young people in recovery, parents who have lost children, and medical experts. “Our program has resulted in hundreds of parents reaching out about concerns about their children and families,” he said.

Chaikin recently joined Karp, Wigodsky, Norwind, Kudel & Gold P.A. Prior to that, he was an assistant state’s attorney in Montgomery County, which is where he witnessed firsthand the effects of the nation’s growing opioid crisis.

As a member of the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Chaikin started the Creating an Improved Tomorrow program in four high schools and presented on topics that included the Trayvon Martin case and self-defense, and cyber bullying. Future topics will include traffic stops and community-police relations.

In the last 10 years, Chaikin has made many evening presentations to PTA and neighborhood watch on the range of these subjects. “My commitment has always extended well beyond 5 p.m. and has always included weekends,” he said. “I am available to respond to concerns from parents and our communities.”

These efforts have led to Chaikin to be recognized with numerous , including Montgomery County Public Schools’ 2015 Award for Exemplary Service to Schools, and the President’s Citation for Outstanding Service in 2016 from the Bar Association of Montgomery County.
