brent-casey-headshotCasey N.R. Brent has had opportunities that have not been possible for many others, so she’s focused on being a force for positive change for everyone at the Maryland Public Service Commission.

“Two Baltimores exist and it is more clear now than at any time in our city’s history,” said Brent, the director of consumer affairs with the Maryland Public Service Commission since January 2018. “My commitment to inspiring change spans my career and with every opportunity, I work to dismantle the structures that maintain the two Baltimores.”

One way Brent has implemented change is in the commission’s supplier diversity program. For the first time in its 10-year history, participants have exceeded the program’s 25% goal of working with minority- and women-owned business enterprises, including a 42% increase in its work with women-owned businesses. Brent hopes her mentoring with children who were planning a garden at the Westport Boys & Girls Club planted seeds for a brighter, healthier future.

“Many children weren’t familiar with the variety of vegetables available, so more than a garden was needed,” she said. “Together, we developed a healthy food curriculum, a children’s cookbook and better eating habits in addition to a garden.”
