A Montgomery County native, Kate McDonough has spent a majority of her nearly two decade legal career focusing on litigation and family law.

In 2018, she founded the Silver Spring-based McDonough Law after previously working at Andalman & Flynn Law Firm P.C. for nearly 12 years rising to the title of partner. McDonough is a graduate of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and Xavier University.

What’s the most important thing you do in your job?

My job is to help clients get through the most challenging phase of their lives in the most efficient and supportive way possible. I often think of the Emerson quote on what it means to have success: “…to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived.” | aim to help my clients breathe easier and start their new lives off on the best foot possible.

What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?

Access to justice, particularly for those with language barriers. Too often, members of our community are not aware of services offered by the court and/or nonprofits simply because they don’t speak or read English. Also, I’d love to see more Spanish-speaking attorneys be trained as Best Interest Attorney, as there are very few of us that handle these cases and who are willing to take cases pro bono. Finally, I’d wish for more collaboration among nonprofits that assist individuals with limited financial means.
