Mark T. Gladwin

A vascular, heart and lung physician-scientist, Dr. Mark T. Gladwin, M.D., was appointed the 31st dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in August 2022. He is also the vice president for Medical Affairs at the University of Maryland Baltimore and holds the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor Endowed Chair.

In his first year as dean at UM, Gladwin launched new institutes focusing on addiction medicine, health computing and neuroscience. He also recruited senior leaders in diversity, equity and inclusion, health computing and precision medicine, community health and new venture development, and raised more than $5 million in philanthropy.

Gladwin earned his medical degree in 1991 from the University of Miami. Before joining the University of Maryland, he was a professor  and chairman of the department of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

He is the co-author of two medical textbooks: “Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple” and “Critical Care and Hospitalist Medicine Made Ridiculously Simple.”

Rising costs of the delivery of care, including salaries, regulations and medical devices, with reduced capitated reimbursement and limited cost savings.

What is the most encouraging development in health care?

Potential impact of artificial intelligence, particularly for population health and molecular medicine, including RNA therapeutics, vaccines, genetically engineered T-Cells, antibody-based therapeutics.

What do you do for fun and why?

Reading, running, soccer and enjoying a glass of cabernet with friends.
