In the Lead: Best Startup Businesses in Maryland recognizes startup companies that demonstrate vision and excellence across a broad spectrum of criteria.

People often encounter problems throughout their lives. Those who choose to try to find a solution and start a business to tackle that issue are special. They want to try and help solve the problem for others and make improvements for others too.

The challenges facing startup businesses are well documented. Having to convince others that the product you believe in will be a success can be just the start. Figuring out production and distribution are complex too. Doing it in the ever-changing economic conditions makes it much harder.

The companies you will learn about in this section are focused and driven to succeed despite these odds. Perhaps they will become true trailblazers.

Perhaps they are trailblazers in a sector traditionally dominated by male-owned companies.

This list was compiled by The Daily Record’s editorial leadership team based in part on recommendations from the community as well as our own internal research.

To qualify for recognition, a company must have been in business for at least a year; demonstrate success in the local business community through growth in revenue or employees; and demonstrate strong and consistent community engagement among other criteria.
