Thomas R. Mullen
Mercy Health Services and Mercy Medical Center
Mercy Medical Center has thrived in a downtown location under the leadership of Thomas R. Mullen at a time when many urban hospitals nationwide are closing.
Mullen led the development of the $400 million replacement inpatient tower, which opened in December 2010 and marked a renewed Mercy’s commitment to remain an anchor of the city’s central business district.
“We thought it was important to stay in Baltimore, and we serve an important function in that we provide high-level care to people of all needs,” Mullen said.
He has also led recruitment of nationally and internationally recognized physicians and development of a new center for women’s medicine.
Mercy ranks as the second-highest hospital in the state by U.S. News and World Report and is a four-star rated hospital for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. It was also named one of America’s 100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Programs by Backer’s Hospital Review.
Mullen oversees about 5,000 employees across many different organizations. In January 2016, he completed service as a commissioner on the Health Services Cost Review Commission in Maryland.
Mullen is on the MHS board and on the board of Mercy Ridge, a retirement center in Timonium. He also serves on the Greater Baltimore Committee board and the Avalon Foundation board. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
In 2004, he was awarded the Maryland Stars of Life EMS Citizen Award for saving the life of two teenagers whose kayaks had overturned on a river outside his home in Oxford.
