WILMINGTON, Del. — A man has reached a $1.7 million in church sexual abuse case.

Attorneys for Joseph Curry announced the settlement Wednesday. Joseph Curry claimed he was abused for several years in the 1980s by the late Rev. Edward Carley at St. Dennis’ Church in Galena, Md. The parish is part of the Diocese of , which publicly identified Carley in 2005 as a priest who had sexually abused children.

Opening statements in the trial of Curry’s against the parish had been scheduled for Wednesday. Curry also sued the diocese, but that portion of the lawsuit was delayed after the diocese declared bankruptcy.

Two of Carley’s other victims have settled their lawsuits against the diocese and a Wilmington parish.
