Accounting

Kurt Sturn has joined Reznick Group’s Baltimore office as a tax principal. Sturn previously worked at Watkins Meegan, in Bethesda. Before that, he founded and was managing tax partner of Sturn Wagner Lombardo & Co., in Annapolis, after having worked with BDO Seidman and KPMG.

Emily Girch has joined the tax department of Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, of Baltimore, as a senior accountant. Girch graduated from American University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in accountancy.

Architecture

Matthew Compton has been promoted to associate principal with Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects. Compton will oversee the design and construction of architectural projects involving churches and religious communities, higher education, multi-unit housing, nonprofits, renovation/expansion, and historic preservation. He will also assist with the management of staff and operations within the firm’s Baltimore office. Compton, a licensed architect and LEED accredited professional, sits on the boards of directors for Baltimore Heritage and Charles Village Civic Association and is an Urban Design Committee member for AIABaltimore.

Awards

The Home Builders Association of Maryland has presented its annual awards: Stewart Greenebaum, president of Greenebaum & Rose Associates, received the Builders Lifetime Achievement Award. David Thaler, D.S. Thaler & Associates, received the Associates Lifetime Achievement Award. Chris Rachuba, managing member of Rachuba Homebuilders and chairman of the Maryland Community Builders Foundation, was named Builder of the Year. Leslie Rosenthal, director of marketing and builder services with Bob Lucido Team of Remax Advantage Realty, is Associate of the Year.

Becky Cockerham, College of Southern Maryland’s grant development specialist, recently received the Council for Resource Development’s Outstanding Grants Professional Award. Among the funding the college obtained through Cockerham’s work was a $1 million Department of Labor High Growth Job Training Initiative Grant that allowed CSM to develop Career Starters, a 10-week boot camp-type program that provides instruction in welding, electrical, home inspection, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and carpentry, and made possible the opening of the Center for Trades and Energy Training.

Richard Schaffer, of Lockheed Martin in Bethesda, has received the National Training & Simulation Association’s Lifetime Achievement and Governor’s awards for his work in distributed simulation and virtual environments to save the lives of military personnel. Schaffer’s work set foundations in Department of Defense training and simulation, including creating the basis for Distributed Interactive Simulation standards and High Level Architecture for Modeling and Simulation.

Rob Ryan, managing director in the Baltimore office of RSM McGladrey Inc. and McGladrey & Pullen LLP, providers of assurance, tax and consulting services, recently received one of the firms’ annual Achievement Awards. Ryan was recognized with the Unity Award for his work to actively partner with other groups within McGladrey, as well as McGladrey Alliance partners, to forge collaborative, successful teams.

Three second-year students in the respiratory care therapist program at the Community College of Baltimore County finished second while representing Maryland in a recent national academic competition. Kevin Abbott of Catonsville, Ben Mellies of Owings Mills, and Rebecca Sonn of Forest Hill are also student-members of the MD/DC Society for Respiratory Care.

Mark Osteen, a professor at Loyola University Maryland, has received the Dr. O. Marvin Lewis Award for the best essay published in “Weber: The Contemporary West.” The essay is an excerpt from Osteen’s new book, “One of Us: A Family’s Life with Autism.” The memoir, recommended by the Autism Society of America, offers a personal narrative of the struggles and triumphs of a family whose child has severe autism.

Boards

Kristy Johnson, editor in chief of Shepreneur Magazine, has been elected to the board of directors of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship’s Baltimore affiliate. Johnson will serve a three-year term. Shepreneur Magazine is a national publication for women entrepreneurs. Johnson, of Owings Mills, is also an educator and public speaker. NFTE is an international nonprofit that provides entrepreneurship programs to young people from low-income communities. The organization’s Baltimore affiliate provides entrepreneurship curriculum to 24 Baltimore schools.

Doug Wrenn, a principal with Rodgers Consulting, of Germantown, was installed recently as chairman of the board of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce. Chris Zindash, of Crowne Plaza Rockville, is chairman-elect. Sam McNamee, of Signs of Progress, is treasurer. Vice chairs are Ron Dimaranan, of Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union; David Edgerley, of HarVest Bank of Maryland; Colette Releford, of Strive Business Solutions; and Scott Wallace, of Linowes and Blocher. McNamee received the Chamber’s Fourth Annual Small Business of the Year Award. Zindash received the You Made a Difference Award for serving as vice chair of the legislative committee and his work on “meet the candidates” forums in 2010.

The Maryland Humanities Council has added Elizabeth (Betsy) Cadwallader, Elizabeth Cannon, Silvia Golombek and Christopher Leighton to its board of directors. Cadwallader is vice president, head of Credit Risk at Constellation Energy; she is a graduate of the Leadership Maryland Class of 2010. Cannon is a program manager in the Software Division at Hewlett-Packard Co.; she has served as a volunteer for the Dove Center, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, the Miss Maryland Organization, the Oakland Main Street program and other community and charitable organizations in Maryland. Golombek is senior vice president at Youth Service America after having been learning manager at the International Youth Foundation in Baltimore. Leighton is executive director of the Institute for Christian & Jewish Studies. The Maryland Humanities Council is an educational, nonprofit organization that works to stimulate and promote informed dialogue and civic engagement on issues critical to Marylanders.

The Home Builders Association of Maryland has installed its 2011 executive committee and board of directors: president, Bob Goodier, Goodier Builders; president-elect, Rod Hart, Dan Ryan Builders; first vice president, Scott Armiger, Orchard Development; associate vice president, Scott Barhight, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston; secretary, Cindy McAuliffe, Grayson Homes; treasurer, Theresa Leatherbury, The Rachuba Group; immediate past president, Eliot Powell, Whitehall Development.

Terry Squyres has been elected to the board of trustees of the Contemporary Museum, in Baltimore. Squyres is an associate principal at GWWO Architects, where she is also a member of the firm’s management team. She is an LEED-accredited professional recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council. Squyres holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.

Brewing

Kurt Krol has been hired as a brewer by DuClaw Brewing Co., of Abingdon. He previously was a brewer at Clipper City Brewing Co., for two years, winning five GABF medals and two World Beer Cup medals. A home brewer of more than six years, Krol graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with two bachelor’s degrees.

Congregation

Har Sinai Congregation, of Owings Mills, has hired Melanie Waxman as director of family programming and Ben Fuld as senior youth group director. Waxman previously served as youth and teens director for the Jewish Community Center; principal at Columbia Jewish Community School; program director at Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs, Fla.; and youth director for Har Sinai Congregation. She attended graduate school at Baltimore Hebrew University, now the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University, and earned her bachelor’s degree at Towson University. Fuld, a senior at the University of Maryland, has held several positions serving youth groups. He was a member of the senior staff at the Union of Reform Judaism’s Camp Kutz.

Consulting

Clemons & Associates, based in White Marsh, recently was awarded accreditation by AMC Institute, the global trade association representing the association management industry. Association management companies specialize in managing associations and not-for-profit organizations, providing leadership and professional management.

Education

Maryland Institute College of Art has established the Tylden Westcott Streett Scholarship for Figurative Art, created through a gift from alumnus and interdisciplinary sculpture professor Tylden Westcott Streett. The endowment begins with $25,000, and an additional $175,000 will be added through a bequest. The scholarship will be open to MICA undergraduates, working in any medium, whose work explores the human figure. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need and merit, and recipients will be chosen among candidates entered in MICA’s juried annual Student Scholarship Competition. Two years after graduating, Streett returned to MICA in 1959 as a teacher of figurative sculpture. He served as director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture from 1959 to 1960 and as director of graduate programs from 1965 to 1971. He was awarded MICA’s Medal of Honor in 2009.

The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce presented scholarships last month to four Montgomery College students. Chamber members MAR Inc., The Gazette and Hughes Network Systems together provided three one-year scholarships and one gap funding scholarship for a prior recipient to assist with costs for finishing his education at Montgomery College. The four recipients were: Zulaqarnain Jamal, a nuclear engineering major who plans to transfer to Georgia Tech; Syed Elahi, who is studying mechanical engineering; Vy Nguyen, an electrical engineering major; and Mohammad Alhassen, a chemical engineering major.

The Calvert Chamber of Commerce recently presented the College of Southern Maryland with donations totaling $3,074 to support student scholarships.

David Stewart, a 37-year faculty member at the Community College of Baltimore County, has been appointed academic dean of CCBC’s School of Mathematics and Science. He has been mathematics department chair at CCBC Catonsville, and division chairperson for Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Technology and academic dean for Mathematics and Science at CCBC Dundalk. Stewart has a master’s degree in applied mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. He has held adjunct teaching positions at Johns Hopkins University, Towson University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Edgar B. Schick has been appointed president of Baltimore International College. He had been interim president since May 10. Schick has served as head of the State College and University System of Maryland, vice chancellor of the University of Maryland System, president of the Luther Institute, and chief academic officer of St. John Fisher College, Eastern Illinois University, and St. Mary College of Leavenworth. He was interim provost of Manhattanville College before being hired by Baltimore International College. Schick has served as a consultant for the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Health Care

Dr. Scott Sherr has joined the internal medicine/primary care practice of Dr. Simon Scalia at Mercy Canton Family Care, in Baltimore. Sherr received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical System.

Dr. Paul Wu has been named medical director of Patient First—Bel Air. He is responsible for all medical operations of the center. A board-certified physician, Dr. Wu began his career with Patient First as a staff physician at the Green Spring Station center in 2008. One year later, he was appointed assistant medical director of Patient First—Bel Air.

Nonprofits

Christal M. Jackson has been appointed chief development officer of Associated Black Charities, of Baltimore. Jackson has launched three startup companies, and worked for Jackson & Associates Development Group and the Central Pregnancy Care Center, of Houston; Paul Quinn College, Dallas; United Negro College Fund, Virginia; The Children’s Defense Fund, Washington, D.C.; Big Bethel AME Church, Atlanta; and Luis Palua Evangelistic Association, Portland, Ore. She holds a master’s degree in theological studies from Duke University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and religion from Spelman College. Jackson is a Certified Grant Writer, and a board member of the Urban Souls Dance Ensemble.

Robert M. Aydukovic has been appointed executive director of the Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation, a nonprofit that works to strengthen the state’s construction industry. Aydukovic has 20 years of experience in economic development and in Maryland’s construction and real estate industries. He has a master’s degree in real estate development from Johns Hopkins University. Aydukovic most recently served as principal and owner of Downtown Development Advisors, and as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Baltimore. MCCEI was established at Towson University as a public-private partnership of state government, universities, community colleges and secondary schools to promote the economic vitality of construction in Maryland, serve as a resource for industry, education and government, and position construction as a career of choice.

Nancy Hinds

Nancy Hinds has been appointed executive vice president of institutional advancement at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. She will oversee development and fundraising, individual and corporate membership, special events, facility requests, group sales, and marketing and public relations; Hinds also will assist with government affairs. She had been vice president of public affairs for Visit Baltimore, where she began as director of communications in 1998. Hinds was a producer for WMAR-TV from 1983 to 1993, and returned as a freelancer for two years in 1996. She was the manager of marketing services at the Rouse Co., at Harborplace & The Gallery in Baltimore, in 1993 and 1994 before becoming editor of Maryland Family Magazine and Fifty Plus until 1998.
