State lottery suspends sales of Monopoly Millionaires’ Club game

The Monopoly Millionaires’ Club game will not continue to pass Go after 24 states, including Maryland, have stopped selling the multi-state game.

The and Gaming Agency announced Monday that sales of the game had not met projections and that it would suspend sales Dec. 26.

“This is a necessary business decision,” Maryland Lottery Director Stephen Martino said in a statement. “Research indicated that players were looking for a game like this. Unfortunately, they have not embraced the concept as anticipated. We believe it is appropriate along with the other states selling the game to step back and assess the game’s future.”

The draw-style game with multi-tiered prizes debuted Oct. 19.

The Texas Lottery Commission suspended sales after the Dec. 12 drawing. Other lotteries participating in the game decided to end sales Monday.

Since its inception, there has been one $1 million winner and six $20,000 winners. Five of those six have already claimed their prizes, according to Maryland lottery officials.

Winners have 182 days to claim their prizes.

State officials said television portion of the game, which is taped in Las Vegas, will still continue as scheduled. The 12 Maryland residents who won trips to participate in that will move forward with taping.
