What’s the most important thing you do in your job?
Listening. As a litigator, the majority of my time is spent reading, writing and talking. But, I believe the most important part of my job is listening and comprehending. In order to effectively represent people who have been injured or lost loved ones as a result of negligence, I must first truly understand their story. Only then can I help those people navigate the civil justice system by presenting their story to others, whether it be opposing counsel, a judge, or a jury.
What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?
The public perception of plaintiffs’ trial lawyers. Plaintiffs’ trial lawyers are often maligned as greedy and selfish. In my experience, however, most plaintiffs’ trial lawyers feel a deep sense of responsibility to help their clients achieve justice, and a deep sense of gratitude for the clients who trust that lawyer. Folks who are injured as a result of someone else’s negligence need to be able to trust that their lawyer will help them at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.
If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing?
I love to read and write, which serves me well in my profession. I love my job, but if I was not practicing law my goal would be to edit novels and maybe one day to write one!
