University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman says the connections he has made and conversations he has had over the years that mean the most to him.
“I’m most proud that I’ve been able to meet all sorts of people during my career, to interact genuinely with them and find common ground. That is so essential in education,” Perman wrote. “And I believe teachers, staff and administrators — have an obligation to be open to people, to make them feel seen and heard, to address their concerns and celebrate their achievements.”
Perman added that a woman he met while he was dean of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine told him he is “just plain.” He considers it a very high
compliment.
When Perman became chancellor in 2020, his mission was to ensure that every child growing up in Maryland — or any person living in Maryland — who wants a college
education is prepared for it, is excited about it and can afford it.”
“Virtually everything I do as the leader of the state’s system of public higher education is in pursuit of that three-part goal,” he said.
Perman sits on the board of the Carnegie Postsecondary Commission, the Aspen Institute Higher Education Climate Action Task Force, the National Association of System Heads and the Governor’s Life Sciences Advisory Board, among others.
He said he is lucky to have had about every job imaginable in the field of higher education and academic medicine.
