Elyse Strickland relocated from the Philadelphia suburbs to Washington, D.C., to pursue her undergraduate education at The George Washington University. She graduated from the Elliott School of International Affairs in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree.

Following graduation, Strickland gained professional experience working in law firms for two years before enrolling at the American University Washington College of Law. She earned her Juris Doctor in 1995.

What’s the most important thing you do in your job?

There are many important aspects of my job, and so it is hard to choose just one. However, at its core, the most meaningful and impactful part of my job is serving as a “counselor” — in the traditional sense of the word. As a family law attorney, my work often includes the most personal, emotional, and life-altering moments in a client’s life. I guide clients through these difficult transitions with sound legal strategy, but also with compassion.

What qualities do you need to be a successful family law practitioner?

Reputation is everything in family law. Clients, judges, and opposing counsel remember how you conduct yourself — both inside and outside the courtroom. I believe the most valuable reputation a family law attorney can have is being known as tough but honest. That means being a strong, effective advocate for your client while maintaining credibility, integrity, and professionalism at all times.

Outside of your legal practice, what activities or interests are you passionate about?

Outside of my legal practice, I’m passionate about self-care and maintaining a healthy sense of balance — something I’ve learned is essential in a profession that can be emotionally and mentally demanding. For me, self-care isn’t indulgent; it’s how I stay focused, resilient, and effective in my work.

That often means getting outdoors and hiking with my dog, which helps me reset and clear my mind. I also find value in practices like yoga and meditation.
