FREDERICK — The Army says it’s making at in available to civilians for the first time.

The Frederick News-Post reported Wednesday that occupancy rates in the post’s 354 units have fallen below 90 percent, making it hard to afford routine maintenance.

Spokespersons for the installation and rental management company Balfour Beatty Communities say leases are available for interns, civilian employees, contractors and others affiliated with Fort Detrick.

Balfour Beatty spokeswoman Kathy Grim says anyone who applies for housing at Fort Detrick must pass a background check before moving in.

She says other military installations are doing the same thing to keep housing rates up.
