Suntha’s goals for UMMS include continuing to deliver compassionate and high quality care to patients, prioritizing UMMS’s commitment to the communities it serves, transforming the health care system to provide the most value to its patients and to make new discoveries within the field of medicine.
Before his current position, Suntha served as the president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center, one of the nation’s oldest academic medical centers. Prior to that, from 2012 to 2016, Suntha was president and CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center.
Suntha has a strong background in academia, having joined the faculty with the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology in 1995 after completing his medical residency with the department. Suntha currently holds tenure as a professor with the university and his research focuses on patients diagnosed with carcinomas of the head and neck and esophagus.
Suntha received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He also holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
