For more than 30 years, Dr. Elliot Hirshman has served in the higher education sector. Five years ago, he was named president of Stevenson University after previously holding the top position at San Diego State University.
Beginning his higher education career as a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Hirshman would go on to hold several leadership positions, including provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and chief research officer and chair of the department of psychology at George Washington University.
He holds a doctorate and master’s degree in cognitive psychology from the University of California Lost Angeles and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health at New York University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Yale University.
Since 2019, Hirshman has served as vice chair of the board of trustees for the Maryland Independent College and University Association. In 2021, he became member at-large for the board of directors for the Owings Mills Corporate Roundtable. He previously served as chair of the board of directors for the San Diego State University Research Foundation and as a member of the board of directors for The Campanile Foundation, both from 2011 to 2017.
