Early in his career, soon after he walked through the doors at the University of Maryland Medical Center for his residency in radiation oncology, Mohan Suntha learned what a privilege it is to be a physician and part of a health care team.
“I understood then, as I do now, that we have the opportunity to impact the lives of the citizens of Baltimore, the state of Maryland, and indeed the nation,” Suntha said in introducing his vision for the University of Maryland Medical System, where for the past two years he has served as president and CEO.
Suntha’s goals for UMMS include continuing to deliver compassionate and high-quality care to patients, prioritizing UMMS’s commitment to the communities it serves, transforming the health care system to provide the most value to its patients and to make new discoveries within the field of medicine.
Before his current position, Suntha served as the president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center, one of the nation’s oldest academic medical centers. Before that, from 2012 to 2016, Suntha was president and CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center.
In June 2022, University of Maryland Medicine, a joint enterprise of the University of Maryland School of medicine, the University of Maryland Medical Center and the University of Maryland Medical System, announced a landmark initiative, My Healthy Maryland Precision Medicine Research, to understand how genes and lifestyle affect an individual’s health.
