Carol Ann Smith

Assistant Attorney General
Office of the Maryland Attorney General

Please describe your career background.

I started my professional career as an attorney at Maryland’s Legal Aid Bureau Inc., representing families and specifically children living below the federal poverty level. My passion to help those less fortunate in our society grew over the years I spent at Legal Aid. I learned early on that most people have something to offer their community and will gladly contribute if given the chance. I was fortunate to witness clients, in some instances, go from hopelessness to having a renewed hope just because someone was there to advocate for them.

I have gone on to represent the State of Maryland’s Human Services Agency in the Department of Human Services in my current capacity in the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

Although no longer directly involved with the client’s receiving assistance from the state, I strive to stay up to date on the challenges facing citizens in need of assistance and working with my clients on the best ways to meet the needs of the community.
