Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer
Community Bank of the Chesapeake

What is yoru most significant ccomplishment?

After earning a degree in human resources (HR) management, I was given the opportunity to establish and lead a formal HR department at Community Bank. At that time, we didn’t have a well-defined culture in the form of a written mission or purpose, or any stated core values.

Our company was growing in the number of employees and geographically — making it more important than ever to develop a program that allowed us to maintain consistency in our culture and expectations. To start this initiative, I developed what we call our Culture of Excellence, which includes our mission, vision, values and behavioral standards for employees. We involved a focus group of employees to help develop these components, which fostered a sense of ownership and pride, and ultimately turned those participants into champions for the program.

I was responsible for ensuring that our Culture of Excellence was woven into our various HR processes, including recruitment and selection, training, performance management and recognition. Years later, employees are still applying the principles of our Culture of Excellence program to guide their actions and decisions to exceed expectations. We talk about our culture, mission and vision every single day.
