We are pleased to introduce a new recognition program — In the Lead: Best Family-Owned Businesses in Maryland — which recognizes accomplished companies owned by families that demonstrate excellence across a broad spectrum of criteria.

The businesses highlighted in this list are contributing in many ways to the economic success we see in our state.

Family-owned businesses face lots of challenges. Technological changes. Competition from well-financed corporate chains. Succession issues.

The companies you will learn about in this list succeed and overcome these challenges. They thrive on some or on many levels – growth in the marketplace; high employee morale; strong community engagement; innovation and product breakthroughs.

This list was compiled by The Daily Record’s editorial leadership team based in part on recommendations from the community as well as our own internal research.

To quality for recognition, a company must be entirely or substantially owned by a family and based in Maryland or operate extensively in Maryland. It can be a franchise or subsidiary of a national or regional company as long as the local operation is family-owned.
