As Klein’s Family Markets approaches its centennial celebration in 2025, President Marshall Klein reflects on the legacy of his family’s business serving the Baltimore metro area since 1925.

The nine-store ShopRite supermarket company, a member of Wakefern, the nation’s largest retailer-owned cooperative, has grown to employ more than 1,400 people while maintaining its community-centered focus.

“Having a family-owned business is about more than just running a successful company; it’s about creating a legacy that reflects our family’s dedication to both our team and the communities we serve,” Klein said. “As a fourth-generation business, we are privileged to carry forward the work of those who came before us.”

The company’s commitment to growth while preserving its values has been a key challenge. As Klein’s expanded its footprint, maintaining the tight-knit culture that has defined the business remains a priority.

Community service and philanthropy continue to be cornerstones of Klein’s identity. The company supports numerous local organizations, including Upper Chesapeake Hospital Cancer Center, Char Hope Foundation and LifeBridge Health. One of its most significant contributions has been helping establish the Klein Family Harford Crisis Center, addressing critical mental health and addiction services needs in the community.
